Why Our Cutting Boards Are 100% Food Safe
When it comes to products used in the kitchen—especially ones that come into direct contact with food—safety is our top priority. That’s why every cutting board we make is crafted using only food-safe materials, from the type of wood we choose to the glues and finishes that bring everything together.
✅ Food-Safe Adhesive: Titebond III Wood Glue
Many of our cutting boards feature intricate designs that require joining pieces of wood. For that, we use Titebond III Ultimate Wood Glue. This glue is:
- Waterproof
- FDA approved for indirect food contact
- Non-toxic when cured
🪵 Hardwood Choices Matter
We carefully select durable, closed-grain hardwoods that are not only stunning but also naturally resistant to bacteria and moisture when maintained properly. Some of the most common types we use include:
- Maple – A classic cutting board wood, known for its durability and fine, closed grain.
- Walnut – Rich in color and gentle on knife edges, it’s a favorite for both looks and performance.
- Cherry – Ages beautifully with use and has a warm, reddish tone.
- Padauk – A bold, reddish-orange hardwood that adds vibrant contrast to any board.
- Yellowheart – Known for its bright yellow color and excellent stability.
- Purpleheart – Striking deep purple wood that darkens beautifully with age.
- African Mahogany – Lightweight yet durable, with warm, reddish-brown hues and a beautiful ribbon grain.
- And other woods as needed – Occasionally we incorporate additional hardwoods that meet our standards for beauty, durability, and safety.
🛢️ Protective Finish: Sanco Industries Food Grade Mineral Oil
Once the board is fully assembled and sanded smooth, we saturate it with Sanco Industries Food Grade Mineral Oil. This oil:
- Penetrates deep into the wood to prevent drying and cracking
- Repels moisture and bacteria
- Is 100% food-safe and odorless
🕯️ Handmade Board Wax: Beeswax + Mineral Oil Blend
After oiling the board, we apply a custom wax blend that we make ourselves by melting Wuna Yellow Beeswax into Sanco Industries Food Grade Mineral Oil. This creates a soft, creamy board wax that’s easy to apply and offers superior protection. We rub it onto the board by hand and buff it to a natural sheen.
- Forms a protective seal over the wood surface
- Enhances the grain and adds a soft luster
- Made entirely from food-safe, natural ingredients
- Adds a soft, water-resistant finish
- Enhances the wood’s color and texture
- Is completely edible and safe for food contact
